Brocéliande & its legends: what you need to know

  • A timeless journey: Dive into the heart of Arthurian myths by visiting emblematic places like the Val sans Retour (Valley of No Return), Merlin’s Tomb, or Comper Castle.
  • Paimpont, the starting point: This charming village is the ideal gateway to soak up the atmosphere and organize your exploration. Don’t miss “La Porte des Secrets” (The Door of Secrets) for a complete immersion.
  • For the whole family: Between guided storytelling walks in the forest, interactive exhibitions at Comper Castle, and performance trails, Brocéliande offers activities suitable for all ages.
  • Prepare your visit: A car is almost essential to connect the various sites. Plan for good walking shoes and check visiting hours, especially for the castle and its events.

Paimpont: the gateway to your Brocéliande adventure

To begin your immersion, I recommend setting foot in Paimpont. This pretty Breton village, built entirely of stone, is the beating heart of the forest. As you wander through its streets, you’ll discover a succession of crêperies and small local craft shops that immerse you directly in the atmosphere. Here, everything speaks of magic, fairies, and Merlin the enchanter. 🧙‍♂️ If you’re lucky, you might even stumble upon the large craft market that often sets up in the village car park during summer.

Before venturing into the woods, a visit is a must: La Porte des Secrets (The Door of Secrets). Housed in the old Paimpont abbey, this scenographic journey is a perfect introduction to the legends you are about to discover. Thanks to visual and sound effects, you will follow a forest ranger who will unveil the mysteries of Brocéliande. Be aware that the immersion is so complete that the experience can be intense for younger children. I recommend it more for children aged 6 and above, as once inside, it’s impossible to turn back!

Comper Castle, at the heart of Arthurian myths

Here’s a visit you’re going to love! Comper Castle, home to the Centre de l’Imaginaire Arthurien (Centre for Arthurian Imagination), is an essential stop. The visit, perfectly suited for everyone, can easily fill a good half-day.

The permanent exhibition housed in the castle brings to life the stories of King Arthur, Merlin, and the fairy Morgana. Between the mannequins, carefully crafted sets, and explanatory panels, the entire legend takes shape before your eyes. It’s an excellent way to visualize these mythical tales.

Our tip 💡

Don’t stop at the castle! The immense park and its lake, where the crystal palace of the fairy Viviane is said to be hidden, are worth exploring. Inquire about the entertainment program: storytelling, puppet shows, markets… There’s always something to see. The puppet shows, in particular, are enchanting. The performer takes you to different corners of the park, using the forest as a natural backdrop for their stories. It’s funny, captivating, and fascinating for all ages!

Brocéliande forest and its legendary sites 🗺️

Brocéliande Forest, or rather Paimpont Forest for the uninitiated, can be explored in many ways, but walking remains the best option to soak up its atmosphere. You can get hiking maps at the tourist office or on their website. For an even richer experience, opt for a storytelling walk. Accompanied by a storyteller guide, you’ll discover the emblematic places through the tales that brought them to life. A fun and captivating approach!

The Val sans Retour (Valley of No Return) and the Golden Tree

This is undoubtedly one of the most famous places. The Val sans Retour was the domain of the fairy Morgana, King Arthur’s half-sister. She held unfaithful knights captive there. It took all the bravery of Lancelot du Lac to break the spell. As you walk, don’t miss the Golden Tree, a sculpture covered with real gold leaves, symbolizing the forest’s rebirth after a terrible fire.

Legend has it that the Val sans Retour only allows pure and faithful hearts to escape. Will you be worthy?

Merlin’s Tomb and the Fountain of Youth

Prepare for a powerful moment. Merlin’s Tomb is a place charged with emotion. According to legend, it was here that the fairy Viviane imprisoned the enchanter in an invisible prison to keep him with her forever. Today, only two stones remain of what was once a covered alley, but the magic of the place is intact. You will see many offerings left by visitors.

A few steps away, don’t miss the Fontaine de Jouvence (Fountain of Youth). While its name is promising, don’t expect a monumental fountain! It’s a simple water source, but its history is rich. This is where druids performed their rituals.

To make your day a complete success, here are a few tips:

  1. Come by car 🚗: The legendary sites are scattered over a vast territory. Having your own vehicle is almost essential to fully enjoy your day and travel between Paimpont, Comper Castle, and hiking starting points. If you are traveling by campervan, you will find suitable areas; don’t hesitate to check our tips for preparing your road trip.
  2. Wear appropriate footwear 👟: You’re going to be walking! Forest trails can be muddy or rocky. Hiking boots or good sneakers are essential for your comfort.
  3. Check opening periods: Be aware that, especially in autumn and winter, some parts of the forest may be closed for hunting. Comper Castle also has limited opening hours, generally from April to October. A quick visit to the Brocéliande tourist office website before you leave will help you avoid unpleasant surprises.
  4. Explore the surroundings: Brittany is full of treasures. If you have more than one day, why not extend your trip to the sublime Pink Granite Coast or discover the most beautiful medieval villages in the region?
