Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an old stone lover, or simply curious, one thing is certain: these villages have a soul. 🤩 They are worth the detour!
In this article, we’re taking you to discover 5 Breton medieval gems: Vitré, Fougères, Dinan, Locronan, and Rochefort-en-Terre. Wonders that we explored during our campervan road trip. Hold on tight, here we go! 🚀
Vitré: dive into the heart of the Middle Ages!
Perched at the gates of Brittany, Vitré is a real film set. It’s simple, this medieval city is one of the best preserved in France!
From the first steps, you are transported to the time of knights. Take the time to stroll through its cobblestone streets lined with half-timbered houses and explore the small shops.
Start your visit with the unmissable Château de Vitré, a true symbol of the city. This 13th-century fortified castle proudly dominates the Vilaine valley. With its crenellated towers and defensive appearance, it is imposing! Inside? The city’s art and history museum awaits you.

💡 For families: Remember to ask for the investigation game booklet at the entrance (between 2 and 4 €). The game is quite difficult, younger children will need your help, but it's a great idea to get them interested in the visit!
The castle is not furnished, apart from one or two rooms, but it is in perfect condition.
After the castle, head to the promenade du Val. It’s a bucolic walk along the Vilaine, perfect for admiring the ramparts with beautiful light in the late afternoon. The place is uncrowded and shaded, a real pleasure!

Fougères: explore its legendary fortress!
Fougères boasts exceptional heritage and an authentic atmosphere. We had a big crush on its castle! ❤️
A true labyrinth that the children loved to visit. One of the largest medieval castles in Europe! This 11th-century fortress, expanded over the centuries, is composed of 13 towers, ramparts, and a sentry walk that offer an immersion in the Middle Ages.
Our little tip 💡: Head straight to the tourist office upon arrival! You’ll receive a free map for a circuit that will help you discover all the village’s secrets, even on the heights. Nothing to miss!
Don’t miss the public garden in the upper town. It’s THE spot for a panoramic view of the castle. It’s a lively place where locals come to picnic, play music… We spent a long time strolling there.
Finally, explore the medieval quarter at the foot of the castle and, for a shopping craving, head to the upper town, which is much more modern and lively! 🛍️

Beautiful Dinan: the medieval postcard.
Dinan is undoubtedly one of Brittany’s most beautiful medieval cities. Perched on its promontory, it is encircled by nearly three kilometers of ramparts, among the best preserved in the region!
In the city center, look up, observe the magnificent half-timbered houses, and stop for a good galette! Yes, in Brittany, we definitely say “galette”! 😉
For more calm, head down to Dinan port. It’s the ideal starting point for a boat trip on the Rance. The place is also very photogenic!
Of course, it’s impossible to visit Dinan and understand its history without visiting its medieval castle.
Built at the end of the 14th century by Duke John IV of Brittany, its mission was to protect the city, demonstrate ducal power, and control Dinan’s strategic crossroads. It is an integral part of the ramparts, and this link between fortress and enclosure gives it all its interest.
Today, the castle has been transformed into a museum. Inside, you discover vaulted rooms, spiral staircases, dungeons… You’ll also find collections of weapons, models, and period objects that help to better understand life in a fortified town in the Middle Ages. You’ll need to climb to the top of the keep to enjoy a very beautiful view of the city.
The visit is interactive; you can try on knight helmets, lift swords, smell spices in the kitchen, play board games… The children had a lot of fun, and it makes the visit more lively.

Locronan: an open-air film set.
What a stunner! Locronan was a magnificent discovery for us.
This small village in Finistère, classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, is an ancient weavers’ town. Today, its historic center is perfectly preserved, with its granite houses and large cobbled square. No wonder it’s a popular filming location for cinema!
Our little tip 💡: Head to the tourist office upon arrival! You’ll receive a free map for a circuit that will help you discover all the village’s secrets, even on the heights. Nothing to miss!
Don’t hesitate to push open the doors of the village’s many artisans: candles, paintings, sculptures… there’s something for everyone!

Rochefort-en-Terre: France’s favourite village awaits you!
Another classified village! But wow, Brittany is full of them! It’s a bit like our article on the Cotswolds in England, a concentration of gems!
Built on a rocky spur, it charms with its flowery streets, its granite and half-timbered houses, and its perfectly preserved medieval atmosphere. The village developed around its castle, which still dominates the town, and has managed to retain a rare authenticity. It is renowned for its exceptional floral displays, its art artisans, and its small galleries.
The village attracts many tourists every year, so you won’t be alone during your visit, but that doesn’t detract from Rochefort-en-Terre’s incredible charm!
Here too, you’ll find numerous shops, restaurants, and artisans, making it the ideal place to enjoy a delicious Kouign-amann! 🧈 How can you not succumb to this delicious Breton pastry? We’ve lost count of how many we’ve tasted…
